Seattle landed a Professional Women’s Hockey League franchise in late April. Megan Turner, assistant general manager of the Boston Fleet, was named GM the following month. Hilary Knight, Boston’s captain, the league’s leading scorer and Team USA star, was signed in June, followed by head coach Steve O’Rourke from the Oshawa Generals. The team’s name, the Torrent, was announced in November.
The Torrent had a huge home debut, drawing 16,014 to Climate Pledge Arena. That was the biggest ever for a women’s hockey game in a U.S. arena, and rousingly announced Seattle as the only city having teams in three major professional women’s sports leagues.
