The Film

Our goal is to make a stirring, deeply felt film about the world of competitive diving. Three and a Half Pike is a documentary that sets out to follow the US Olympic diving team as they prepare to compete against some of the world’s best divers on the London Olympic stage. For most of the twentieth century, the United States dominated the sport of diving. From the 1920’s up through the 1980’s, US divers won more than twice as many Olympic medals as any other country; their supremacy was rarely challenged, and the international diving community generally regarded the US training program as a model worthy of emulation. But in the 1990s, the US stranglehold on the sport came to end. After being excluded from the Olympic games for nearly three decades, China reentered the competitive fold in 1984. Within a decade, the Chinese had definitively established themselves as the best divers in the world.

Americans have not brought home a single Olympic medal in over a decade, but this year the US has an incredibly talented group of athletes coming up through the ranks. Our film will follow America’s top competitive divers as they train for and compete in the 2012 Olympics in London.
